This piece is part of a work in progress entitled “The Pieces”. The main concept surrounding these works is transformation and the role that nostalgia and memory play in the process of change.
The space is completely empty, except for a mirror that hangs on the wall. I wear a red dress with lots of pockets sewn on it. I open each pocket, one by one, as I need each thing that is inside. First I prepare a hair color mixture and start dyeing my hair with it. As soon as I finish, I program an alarm clock to go off in half an hour—the time it takes for the dye to work, and I sit and wait. Out of one of the pockets I take a roll of pieces of paper with a photo of me as a kid printed on them. I paint the hair on the image with a red marker. I make paper boats with the pieces of paper. When the alarm sounds I grab a white tub, pitchers of water and a white towel. I rinse my hair as the tub fills with the red water that comes out of it. One by one, I start lighting the little paper boats on fire, as they float on this water. Finally, I wrap up my hair in the towel, I cut my red dress to reveal a white one underneath.
